Lack of Sleep Affacts Kids' Learning Ability
By Vivek
7/17/2008 10:14:00 AM
Lack of sleep can adversely affect the ability of kids to learn and interact at school, according to new study. The new survey led by Melbourne researchers has revealed that nearly a quarter of children aged six and seven have poor sleeping habits, which has a strong effect on their heath, behaviour and learning ability.

The team from the Centre for Community Child Health at the Murdoch Children's Research Institute studied almost 4500 children, whose sleep behaviour was recorded at the age four to five and again at six to seven. About one-third of children reported poor sleep habits.

In another survey, about 23 per cent of the children were reported to have sleep problems. About 6 per cent were classified as moderate or severe.

The problems included children who were unhappy to sleep alone, reluctance to go to bed, restless sleep and waking during the night.

Seven Hours Sleep a Night Helps Reduce Heart Problems
By Vivek

UK's Daily Mail newspaper has cited a study on its website that discusses the benefits and importance of having enough sleep. As per Daily Mail story:

"Getting enough sleep can be difficult for many juggling the demands of work, leisure and family. But experts said yesterday that those who clock up seven hours of shut-eye a night can slash the risk of health problems. Those who manage fewer hours double the risk of heart problems, warn researchers."

The report has also discussed the effects of poor sleep on health of our heart:

"Long-term studies show that those who drop down to five hours or fewer face a 70 per cent extra risk of dying from all causes. They also face twice the risk of death from a cardiovascular problem. However, getting more than seven hours can also be a risk, according to the study by the University of Warwick and University College London."
